In The Studio this week (Block 5/Week 2)

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who you think you're supposed to be and embracing who you are.”

The Script: Police Investigation Audition Piece

Key points from this weeks session:

  • You’re paying to see ‘Olivia Coleman’ so there always has to be an element of her in the work otherwise you wouldn’t need it to be ‘Olivia Coleman’.

  • In playing the Character Description you are inevitably sacrificing your ability to act to your highest potential.

  • We have to humanise the characters and establish a relationship, otherwise we fall into the trap of playing ‘police people’.

  • Be very careful of tailoring yourself for the Middle-class/BBC version of ‘who people are’ - that isn’t YOU. Don’t abandon what makes you special.

Where we struggled:

Acting ‘professional’ for the environment. Being dictated to by the description ie ‘Composed’.

How to overcome?

Route yourself in your self!

Humanise the characters.

Be clear with the intention.

If I pressurise - what is the result I am looking for?

Highlight of the session:

Taking a fairly boring police drama script and creating 3D and human performances by the end of the session.

Having breakthroughs on understanding the philosophy of ‘authenticity’ and why that is SO important in art but also in life.

  • Amirat accent breakthrough.

  • Nancy finding the sass at the start of her take.

  • Holly bringing herself and demonstrating technique to a high standard.

Laugh out loud moments:

Nancy: “everyone around me is dumb.”

Temica and Amirat finding each other hilarious pre-scene.

Nancy and Bu Jamaican accents.

Lots of learning tonight, take some time to really think about what we discussed ie authenticity and taking ownership of the work.

What Brian said about William H Macy is really poignant and important to understand and embody.

As well as Nancy’s thoughts on being accustomed to seek validation and permission. These are KEY for our development as artists.

Have a great week!

Couldn’t find the interview Brian quoted but this one’s pretty good too!
